Win a Copy of Deadmau5′s New Album!

Despite what the non-participating public might think, the world of dance is not just one giant collective community. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite. Dance music has evolved so rapidly and in so many directions since the birth of it’s single common ancestor (disco) that we have now reached a point in which most of the individual “scenes” lose a great deal of credibility for even associating with another sub genre.

deadmau5

Don’t believe me? Let’s pretend for just a quick moment, that I decided to start posting Paul Van Dyk tracks on Uh Oh Disco. Chances are that in less than six months, I’ll have gone the way of Missing Toof.

So that’s how it is, and this is how it’s going to be. Disco is now like 1940′s America, to the point where we’re all now refusing to even be in the same tent at music festivals, and it seems like it’s planning on staying that way. Trance is never going to have a place with the hipsters. Electro is never going to have a place with the minimalists. Minimal is never go to have a place with the (how you say…) dubstepers, and Deadmau5– (tires come screeching to a halt)– wait what?

I think we’ve always known there’s something strange about this giant red mouse, but (at least in my case) it was only in the planning of this update that I was able to finally realize exactly what it is that so powerfully distinguishes him from the rest: He is one of a very small number of artists who have, likely with the help of an extremely rare and recessive gene, conquered the boundaries of electronic sub genre, and have been able to appeal to nearly every electronic music fan, and he’s got the visa stamps to prove it. How many other artists can say they’ve spun hipster events like Hard, raver events like Monster Massive, and (soon to be) pure techno events like the Belgian, I love Techno? I challenge you to think of more than just a couple.

The Contest

Anyway, considering this musical phenomenon has just released an album, I figure there can’t possibly be a better way to celebrate the Mau5 than to win your own personal copy of the work. So check this:

Below this post you’ll find a comment box. You are to leave a comment explaining the most interesting, fascinating, ridiculous, stupid, or hilarious Deadmau5 fact, story, or personal experience you can think of. It can be any length you wish, and can literally contain anything you want. The only requirement is that it be amusing. After one week, the UhOhDisco team will pick their favorite, and hook them up with a copy of Deadmau5′s latest album, “For Lack of a Better Name,” and some swag.

[Unfortunately, we can only mail within the US]

And if that’s not enough to get you feeling motivated, perhaps you’ll enjoy the (genius?) music video for Ghosts ‘n Stuff.

That’s it that’s all. Let’s get storytelling!

Deadmau5 – Strobe

If any of the tunes contained in this post happen to suit your taste, the artist would probably be thrilled if you considered buying them on iTunes, Beatport, or Amazon.

There is this great new production duo called Circuit Freq – Their bio changes for every page you find. It is either some super production humans or robots made of analog gear. They run a record label Circuit Freq Records. Deadmau5 it has been concluded has something to do with this Circuit Freq. He is either subservient to one of these robots, he is a member, or he just likes to party with the duo. Until we know who makes up Circuit Freq we may never know how Deadmau5 is involved. Just that he is involved.

    First Bio from iamarobot3000.
“Who are Circuit Freq? If you check out their Top Friends on the MySpace page you’d think Circuit Freq are Ancient Keyboards from before the Death of Analog – and not Humans. Since we, as humans, need to have all our spaces filled – a story is needed to satisfy your curiosity as to their identities.

Here goes – Circuit Freq is two Estonian high-school age hackers who mod-ed out their musician Dad’s old analog gear and use it to make this insane music.”

  2. Deadmau5… (Real name unlisted)… Amazing artist and very smart guy.

I had the chance to work with him, and invite him to one of my events back on 02/09/2008. This was one of the biggest musicians I have had the opportunity to work with. My event was a smaller rave in a community struggling with all ages events, and electronic music in general. In Reno, there isn’t anything to do if you’re under 21, and when you’re over 21, you can gamble, and drink, but the music here sucks pretty bad. Anyways, it ended up being around 1100 people I think, and after major technical difficulties (forgetting power cords) we were able to get him to play a set, and he killed it.

Afterwards, I hung out with him the next day while we talked about music, coffee, and how he got into producing electronic music. This is the part that blew my mind, and is why he is amazing at what he does. He explained to me about how he fell in love with music, and turns out he loves mastering different tracks and albums, being any genre at all. He listed off a bunch of albums that he had the chance to work on, and explained that he only started making electronic music as a joke, poking fun at a close friend.

Looks like the jokes on him, so many beatport awards, and I’m sure hundreds of thousands of dollars later. He is awesome, and there is defiantly more to him than a big foam mouse head. I hope he continues the great work.

saw him at UBC in Vancouver a couple of days ago… ghosts n stuff came on, it was a killer, except this guy shat himself as he was running through the crowd, poor guy, but funny still, i could swear deadmau5 had a chuckle.

    that’ll win it for me

Maybe not worthing winning the album. But I’ll share anyways. I’m a massive Deadmau5 fan, and Strobe has lifted him to an almost impossibly higher notch in my books. Was in Ibiza last week taking a “night off” at a smaller club and the DJ dropped Not Exactly. I was beeming with national pride and asked an english guy if he knew who produced the track. He said “yeah, Deadmau5″. I asked if he knew where he was from to which he replied “London”. I’m not a scrapper, but I nearly punched him in the mouth.

His first album was titled Random Album Title. What are the initials for this? R.A.T.
    HA!

I have a Deadmau5 personal experience story. I saw him in august this year at Ramshead Live in Baltimore, MD . My first time at that venue really nice place, three stories, nice acoustics, and of course really excited to see Deadmau5 (first time). But he was looking all hung over and just not really into the show. It was probably 100 degrees in this place and he was shivering and had to put on his heavy leather jacket. It really must have been a bad night for him though because besides the fact he was looking all sick or whatever he also broke his mixer/tables that he was playing. He brought out a second computer and wrote a note that said “playing with broken shit, fuck”. After he was done playing he just destroyed his mixer, threw it right into the ground gave it a nice stomp, some office space shit. Anyways, for the personal experience I went to go give him some dap, since ya know it’s Deadmau5 c’mon. Me and my friend went towards where he was going to exit (where some fine ass honeys were too), so I give him five and I’m like, “good show man” he looks me straight in the eyes with the dead stare and says, “I’m going to puke my fucking brains out.” So my friend I start laughing and some chicks behind us are like, “ewwww.” Then he just calmly walks away to I guess puke his brains out. I thought it was a pretty sweet show, even though he was all fucked up, he dropped “maur ghosts and whatever” that was the first time I heard that mix, pretty awesome. Everyone else talked all this shit like oh he wasn’t into it, but whatever all his mixes were clean, though all his tracks are like 128 bpm and flow really nice in sets, he rocks.

I didn’t know who Deadmau5 was until last Halloween so I guess I’m coming up on my one year anniversary of DM5 love. I love Ghosts N Stuff and when I played it for my hipster friends they said they always knew I’d end up overloading on electro and become a raver. Thats not a great story but um just thought Id share the love.

one of my roommates from freshman year apparently used to hang out with him 4 years ago, when he first started making electronic music. now, i love me some deadmau5, but for the whole fucking year, all i heard was how much this kid loved all of his shit and how much he used to hang out with him, etc etc. then late in the year, we went to his show and my roommate approached him. “hey, its xxx, remember xxx…” and he just sort of stares at him. “yea, what do you want?” the kid looked like he was going to cry. i was laughing hysterically. anyway, now whenever he comes to town, my ex-roommate refuses to go, and of course he thinks the new album is shit. so not really a deadmau5 story, but one about my douche of an ex-roommate.

  9. Devlin says:

This is exactly how I felt about it when I first got his cover CD for Mixmag about 2 years ago. I asked myself – “what’s the matter with me? Am I listening to trance?” I comforted myself with calling it tech-house, to make it seem less… euphoric.

I’m loving the new Deadmau5 album. A big departure from his last effort, but still excellent. Just saw them at HARDfest, and my high expectations were more than met.

  14. The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as significantly as this 1. I mean, I know it was my option to read, but I truly believed youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is often a bunch of whining about some thing which you could fix if you werent too busy trying to find attention.
