I don’t normally use Uh Oh Disco as a make-shift Craigslist, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I, being the generic, easily stereotyped faux-hipster that I am, have been searching far and wide for a vinyl copy of Suzanne Kraft’s Green Flash EP, to very little avail. In fact, the closest I’ve come to finding it has been the December 8th ordered copy at Amoeba Records, which I was recently informed was “probably just not gonna come.”

That being the case, I would like any and all readers who own a copy of this record to please package it up (Use bubble wrap and a sturdy box, as I don’t want it damaged) and kindly send it to us here at Uh Oh Disco. If you could get it done ASAP too, that would be fantastic.

Thanks!

There was witch house. Then there wasn’t witch house. It was one of the fastest turnarounds the dance music scene has ever experienced, and with dubstep being the older, jockier newcomer with the trophies on the mantel and a dedicated groupie following, witch house drowned. Perhaps it was because it wasn’t relatable; in retrospect, it was pretty balsy of those guys to think they could make dance music that didn’t even have a beat. Or am I wrong about it being dance music altogether? Was it just that it was associated with dance music producers and remixers that we expect to hear it at clubs? Or because of the simple fact that it’s made on a computer? Who knows. It died. That’s what we do know. But that’s not to say it didn’t leave its mark.

I recently become aware of a group called The Dead Rose Music Company. These guys have taken everything that made witch house great–the visceral moods and thick waves of dreamy noise–and added everything that it was lacking: namely, a groove and a solid beat. The result is some strange form of downtempo, moody house music dripping in a sentiment so strong, it’s sure to turn any drive and ambition you have in life into perfected apathy. It’s incredible.

I‘ve always been a fan of movements. Protesters do tend to do a good job of understanding and spreading the gist of whatever problem it is that’s motivated them to stage their complaints, but when it comes down to me personally, I find it difficult to actually take part, because though the intent is good, lets face it: protesting doesn’t do jack.

Sure, people talk about it while it’s happening. But then it ends, and then they don’t. I’m of the belief that the government glorifies the right to protest so that people will exercise that right when they’re pissed, instead of doing something drastic like, say, beheading the whole lot of Wall Street execs. So I’ve never had much faith in the effect of protesting.

That said, the Occupy Wall Street movement resonates strongly with me, and seeing all those angry Americans out trying so hard knowing full well that the Banks and everyone else that matters are just going to straight up ignore them is infuriating. Which is why when I discovered this little offshoot movement called “Move Your Money,” I was pretty stoked.

Someone (I get the impression it was one of the Wall Street Protesters who decided he wanted to make something actually happen) came up with the idea to encourage everyone to close their accounts with the big banks any move their money elsewhere. That is an idea I can get behind, because unlike protesting, taken money away from the banks is something that directly affects them. Shit, it’s the only thing that directly affects them: it’s money, their number one priority.

So I just wanted to share this little piece of information with you all, and see how you feel about the Wall Street situation. I closed my account with Chase. Call me a faux-maryr or whatever you will, but it feels good to have a real physical impact, even if it’s a totally trivial one.

Will you close your bank?

There was an extremely painful time before the album’s release during which the leading single, Farther and Fainter, was played more than just a couple times each day by KCRW’s brilliant DJ’s, and not being able to get my hands on a copy for myself nearly drove this guy into insanity.

I‘ve been following the UK-based producer for quite some time now, and I feel that after many years, and an incredible back-catalogue of tunes as brilliant as they are diverse, Lenton has finally found the niche that suits him most perfectly. Anyone can produce music, but only a few can do it well. And of those few who can do it well, there’s an even smaller few who have the thousand-hour patience and the relentless drive to stumble into the perfect genre, the one where the producer need not work to make his sounds become music, but where those sounds are merely stylistic additions to music that is somehow, already there. George Lenton is now among such few.

Lenton’s latest EP, entitled Inform, retains the genresurfing characteristic we’ve come to know from him, but though listening to it start to finish will give you everything from dubstep to electro, to hyperdub-esque garage, it’s all beautifully unified by the distinct sound of a producer who has truly found himself.

Inform EP is a coming of age tale with the happiest of endings. With highlights “Believe” and “RDD” playing off the dark energy of the UK dubstep sound (think Jakes and Joker meet 2000f and Lorn), this is a record you really, truly, cannot miss.

Everyone knows how great it feels to watch an artist you’ve long-known finally get the recognition they deserve–I remember when it happened with Classixx. In 2007, I somehow stumbled upon their first single, Cold Act Ill, and despite the fact that at the time they were almost unknown, I couldn’t help but feel humbled. They had that superstar effect; even though every single person I mentioned them to could only mutter, “who?” in response, I knew that they would have their day. Now, maybe I’ve got a little of the hometown hero thing going on, (one of the Classixx guys went to the same high school as me), but mostly, it’s simply that watching someone achieve something that they so clearly deserve feels really great.

Today, I’m happy to say that it’s happened again. Except this time it’s twice as cool, as the admired is among my closest of friends. DJ GOJ!RA, along with his partner in crime Valentino, make up the duo known as Market Price, and their latest release entitled Mark The Throne is among the most brilliantly executed introductions to Los Angeles I’ve ever known. There is arguably no better way to summarize what happens at night in this city than to simply listen to this release. It’s (perhaps obviously) built off of Watch the Throne, the joint venture between Kanye West and Jay-Z, and throughout its length it manages to cram in everything from dubstep to house to 07 electro to Los Angeles’s best: Moombahton. Best of all, it does so without ever being trite.

All intelligent criticism aside, though–hands down, my favorite thing about this album is how much this track reminds me of Royal Rumble. It’s either a brilliant homage or a lucky strike, but to be honest, at this point, I hardly care. God I miss those guys.

Now there’s no way that anyone who lives in Los Angeles could have failed to hear about this already (or so we like to think!), but for the sake of redundancy, tomorrow (Saturday August 26) is our album release party for Uh Oh Disco: Volume I at The Standard Hollywood. If you’re like the rest of us and get wait to get out into a night filled with incredible new music, this is one party you’re not going to want to miss!

Free copies of the record will be given out all night long. Even better, the turntables will be manned by none other than Justin Faust + Fabian, Questions, and Manboy. So seriously, if you live in or near Los Angeles, you’ve been denied all excuses: let’s do this!

RSVP: www.uhohdisco.com/rsvp

Here’s a album teaser for you, though I do warn you: listening to just this one tune is likely to leave you restless and itching for more, and since the party isn’t until tomorrow night, being forced to wait could cause debilitating anxiety. It’s sort of a “once you pop” type thing.
