MSTRKRFT remixes Lil Wayne

It was only a matter of time, right?  I’m actually surprised there aren’t more Lil Wayne dance tracks, given the popularity of the rapper. His latest LP, Tha Carter III, was the top selling album of 2008 and got him four Grammy awards. It seems like he appears as a guest rapper on every hit single out there. The sheer number of tracks he releases (six studio albums so far, along with countless mixtapes and singles) should mean he’s all over the electronic music scene. There’s certainly enough material to remix. But the handful of attempts at Lil Wayne dance remixes that I’ve heard are mediocre at best.

Keri Hilson and Lil Wayne

Well, Canadian remix kings MSTRKRFT have decided that Lil Wayne deserves to be heard at 130 beats per minute. Okay, okay: this is technically a remix of a Keri Hilson song featuring Lil Wayne.  Still, the song gives us a full verse from the rapper and only a loop from the female singer. MSTRKRFT seems like they’re on a mission to prove that every genre (hell, every song) can be made danceable.  Just turn up the tempo, add some drums/guitars and bam!– another banger. They’ve already conquered the rock remix; now they’ve moved on to rap.

But I must say I’m dissapointed with their latest effort. It’s conservative and ordinary; there’s really nothing new or exciting here. Save for the Lil Wayne vocals, it could be any other MSTRKRFT song. Is their formula getting stale? It’s hard to say. I loved their latest album, Fist of God, but I think I’m in the minority. I read some pretty terrible reviews. I think their sound is just very hit or miss. Unfortunately, this new track just doesn’t do it.

I’m interested to hear what our readers have to say about the song below.  Love it? Hate it? Let us know in the comments section.

    Well now I am disappointed.
In my opinion Fist of God was a horrible album. Not a decent song on the entire album, nowhere in comparison with their debut The Looks. Which was an raw album and promised something great. But with Fist of God they delivered probably the worst electronica album I have ever heard. Trying to make a electronica hit with John Legend ?!?! Apart from that song the whole album sounds like 50cent trying to make some “rap-techno”.
And this remix is clear example of how their cheasy album with auto-tuned Lil Wayne over the same sound MSTRKRFT were using for their Looks album.
To me it looks like MSTRKRFT lost it with the Looks.

I actually enjoy that track quite a bit. I do agree Fist of God was pretty week but I though Heartbreak and Breakaway were pretty good. Overall I agree with most that they are being coming a little zzz but still… I got my ticket to go see them next week. Hell no I wouldnt miss that :-P

I enjoyed the start of the song as the hook was pretty fresh, but when the vocals come in it goes downhill. And I thought the Lil Wayne bit was the weakest part, I didn’t feel that it worked. As for Fist of God I enjoyed it, but felt they could’ve done a whole lot better.

I thought the lil wayne verse was pretty sick. A couple songs off the new MSTRKFT were pretty dope. I like the track Click Click. I think MSTRKFT is better at remixing than creating their own tunes though. Their sound may be becoming a biiiit stale, but I love em, bought my ticket for their june 30 show, and expect them to become innovators once again!!

    Good Ole Canadian boys!!

  5. KapeepCity says:

I can see your point but it’s not such a bad track, although it does not have much of that excite factor MSTRKRFT is known for

The part with Keri Hilson’s vocals doesn’t sound very good. The Vocals don’t find a groove with music. The track sounds dope, but it seems to be pulled down a bit in the mix compared to her vocals. The Lil Wayne part is nice though. I think this Keri Hilson track wasn’t much to begin with. You can’t polish a turd. Where on the other hand the MSTRKRFT remix of Zero by the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s is just insane. They only use a very little piece of the vocal, and the track is awesome. It is mostly MSTRKRFT not the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I’m sure they were told to have all of Keri Hilson’s vocal in the track. It feels like some A&R or manager got too involved in the process. I didn’t know the name Keri Hilson until just now. I think that is what this track is supposed to accomplish.

I thought, Fist of God was pretty good. It was less disco than The Looks. I liked Fist of God, Click Click, and Word Up.

I totally feel you, there is definitely something missing in the track as a whole… but the lil waye verse is fire, so one you get there it’s all good.

  10. Jamie says:

Its listed on their myspace, so its for real, sadly.

  11. NURRD says:

this track is garbage, im better off listening to some new jack shit! the fact that they brought this chick and wayne is horrible. what happened to the classic disco mstrkrft? but i do got to say mstrkrft do have some tracks on FIST OF GOD, that are pretty dope.

quick question for everyone, hopefully you guys can help me sort this out between me and a friend.

    is it MISTERKRAFT or MASTERKRAFT??

  13. Johnny says:

Disappointed is a word tossed around a lot in regards to their new album, I felt that way but I couldn’t just have FoG sitting in my track collection, I decided to give it a shot and let it play out a few times now I’m in love with it.

  14. DJ Solespin says:

I can understand why people diss “Fist of God”. “The Looks” was my intro to the modern electro scene and “Work on You” has been the standard by which I measure tracks of that genre.

I heard some of the tracks off of “Fist” and wanted to give it one finger. The Ghostface song is weak. Nore has no business on busy electro tracks.

However, I was watching “So You Think You Can Dance” recently and they used “Heartbreaker”. That song changed my mind about the album, but still it ain’t no “Looks”. It is probably the album’s best moment thanks to John Legend.
